odontophobia:

this book inspired “we are bound together, all of us, by suffering even more than by joy.” it’s a direct quote, in fact. it lead to the writing of the track of the same name.

i guess that i pull a lot of lyrical ideas from literature and pop culture. “suffering” also has a line inspired by thomas pynchon’s gravity’s rainbow.

“1964 - rebirth” the title in particular, is inspired by salman rushdie’s satanic verses.

“city of glass” is inspired by paul auster, particularly the new york triology.

“43.941°N. / -83.271°W.” is, naturally, in part, inspired by the poem of the same name by stevie smith.

a lot of the rest of the songs are about my grandfather who, when i was young, was (mis)diagnosed with alzheimer’s disease. he didn’t know who i was for a lot of the pivotal years of my late youth. as i grew older i realized how much that really meant to me, how much i wish i could’ve known more about him. when you’re young you don’t think that shit’s all that important, but it really is. i know that my grandfather had a lot of stories in him, he served in the korean war but he never talked about that. i don’t even know how he and my grandma met. there’s so little i’ll never get to know about him. when he died i spoke at his funeral. i didn’t tell anybody i planned on doing this, i just got up there and told some jokes, just like howard would’ve. he was a really funny guy. he’s the subject of a lot of my fiction, when i’m bothered to write it.

i’d say that would some it up, but it would be slightly remiss of me to leave out this nerdy detail: “to: crazy legs” is named after a nickname my cousins gave my grandma, but the song is actually really inspired by final fantasy x because we realized that, in culture, love is super idealized and we all strive for something that is super unattainable.

We sat on this for a really, really long time. In part because we wanted to have a few things changed in the masters, but we never saw any further copies/edits than this version.

I don’t want to call this our swan song. We’re still writing songs and we’re still an active band, we’ve simply found ourselves plagued by life and distance. If you’re unaware, the four of us are spread out within Saginaw, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Chicago.

We were supposed to play a show on July 9th, it got cancelled. We still want to play again, sometime soon, and maybe even distribute non-digital copies of this record (though that’s unlikely, we’re broke).

I have four different links to this file (320 kbps mp3 only, sorry). All of them are links to your typical free downloading sites (Rapidshare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and MobileMe). Please pick one at random. I don’t know how many downloads will be authorized. Feel free to host and distribute this record as you see fit. We decided not to go the bandcamp route because it’s not free anymore.

We’re giving this record away. If you want to pay for it, fine, I’ll put up my paypal address and you may give us whatever you see fit. Not really broke but I just don’t consider myself a collector. I don’t listen to music on my record player (my wife does — just her records, not mine).

I am open to cash, but am willing to except some trades (not sure on what but I’m willing to entertain offers).

It’s really unimaginable to see some of this art with my own two eyes, especially when it’s the original copy of the art and not just a print.

Yesterday I saw Salvador Dali’s Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Waking.

The day before I saw Picasso’s Guernica. What’s actually really interesting about Guernica is the transformational process it took from the beginning to the end. Not that it’s entirely different but the process is bizarre (which is to be expected, I suppose).

Madrid is pretty nice. I’ve eaten some great good. I’ve seen a metric-fuck-ton of art. Literally. I’ve been to the Museo del Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza art museums and I’ve seen works by Rafeal, Goya, Picasso, Dali, Durer, and countless others.

Today I leave Madrid and head south to Sevilla. A little more touristy, but it’s a quick two-day trip for Kate and I before we head to the coast and the hill towns near the Straights of Gibraltar.

On a semi-related note, we buy fresh bread every day. Various types of baguettes or some other such types. Cost… about .30 euros. Cans of beer in the grocery store, approximately .33 euros. They also have store brand beer. At one point in time we paid less than 2 euors for a six pack at the store. That’s less than 4 USD. Fuck. And the cost of wine… unreal. You can get bottles for a euro apiece. The great stuff is like 10 euros. We didn’t even bother.

Hopefully I’ll have some more pictures to post soon. I haven’t uploaded any actually pictures from the digital camera yet so it’s somewhat limited to when I actually carry my iPhone around with me, which is next to useless when in airplane mode.
